Transport in India - Local transport - Cars
The demand for cars in India is one of the highest in the world. In 2002, more than 50,000 new cars were bought in Delhi alone. Compact cars predominate due to low cost. Maruti, Hyundai, Tata Motors and Ford are the most popular brands in the order of their market share. The clunky Ambassador once had a monopoly but is now an icon of pre-liberalisation India, and is still used by politicians. Maruti 800 launched in 1984 created the first revolution in the Indian auto sector because of its low pricing. It had the highest market share until 2004, when it was overtaken by other low cost models of Maruti and those of foreign entrants like Hyundai. Over the 20 year period since its introduction about 2.4 million units of Maruti 800 have been sold.

Sabarimala is a renowned pilgrim centre atop the rugged hills of the Western Ghats. This holy shrine is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. The sanctum sanctoram nestles 914 m above sea level, amidst the virgin forest wilderness of the Western Ghats.
The Village of Sabarimala is named after Shabari who did severe penance in order to meet Rama who granted her wish for her devotion and faith during her penance.
The main pilgrimage is undertaken between November and January. Regardless of caste, creed, colour, they wear black dhotis and carry on their heads, bundles containing traditional offerings like coconut filled with ghee, camphor and rice.
The Main Festival
Sabarimala is one of the most important Hindu temples of Kerala. The Sabarimala Temple festival is celebrated in honour of Lord Ayyapan who is revered by all in India.
There are two main pujas called the Mandal Puja and the Makara Sankranti Puja, which are celebrated from November to Middle of January in Kerala, during which time the devotees perform austerities and penance.
The Penance
Devotees undergo rigorous penance and austere living before starting on the pilgrimage. Devotees wear black 'dhotis' and are bare-chested as they prepare for the pilgrimage to Sabarimala.
The temple is at the top of the Neeli hills and the devotees have to climb the treacherous route carrying their meagre provision in a bundle called "Iru Mudi" meaning in "two folds".
The distance from the base of the hill to the top takes about three days to cover and the most important part of the pilgrimage are the final 18 steps, which lead to the temple. The temple dome is covered with gold and the devotees break the coconuts before climbing the steps.
An Unmatched Instance of Religious Tolerance
Opposite the main temple complex, there is a smaller temple for the Muslim god called Wavar, who is an ally of Lord Ayyapa.
Signifying religious tolerance and harmony of the olden days, the devotees pay obeisance to Lord Wavar, on their way to the main temple. After the devotees complete their pujas and offerings, they return to the base of the hill and return to their homes.
The people making the pilgrimage for the first time are known as "Kanni Swamys" and the person leading the group is known as 'Guru Swamy' or the lead person of a team who is incharge of all the rituals.
Devotees take a ritual bath, while climbing up the hill in the holy river Pamba, which is believed to absolve one's sins.
Restricted Entry At The Festival Time
Only young girls who have not attained womanhood and old women who have reached menopause are allowed to worship at this time.
The men must vow to walk bare foot, not cut their nails and hair, sleep on the floor and practise absolute abstinence during the period of their penance.
How to Get There
Transportation is available upto Pamba, from where one has to travel a distance of 5 kms on foot. Devotees undertake rigorous penance, ritualistic vows and fasts before they visit the temple.

Transport in India - Traditional means - Palanquin
Palanquins or "palkee" was one of the luxurious methods used by the rich and nobles for travelling purposes. This was primarily used in the olden days to carry the deity or idol of the god (many temples have sculptures of god being carried in a palki) later on during 15th century we have references that the nobles were also using it for transportation. Girls and ladies from rich families were ferried in palkee and were escorted by males riding on horses.
The word "Palkee" came from the word 'Palanki'. The Portuguese called it "Palan Queem" and the Britishers "Palan Queen". In Sanskrit it is called as "palkee". During the fifteenth century (during the rein of Mughal period) many Muslim families used it. Gradually many landlords and people with royalty also started using it. Modern use of palanquins is limited to being an ostentatious method for the bride to make her entrance at some indian weddings.

During the fifteenth century (during the rein of Mughal period) many Muslim families used it. Gradually many landlords and people with royalty also started using it. Modern use of palanquins is limited to being an ostentatious method for the bride to make her entrance at some indian weddings.

Transport in India - Local transport - Two-wheelers

Transport in India - Local transport - Two-wheelers
Two wheelers are the most popular mode of transport in terms of number of vehicles. There are two main types of powered two-wheelers, the motor scooter and the motorcycle. As of 1998 there were 27.9 million powered two wheelers. The current estimate is a double that.
The scooter was first built in post-war Italy as a two-wheeler with small wheels (supposedly to utilize war-surplus aircraft tailwheels). It differs from the motorcycle in having the driver seated with his legs together, and is thus favoured by women drivers (as sari, a common Indian dress for women, doesn't permit separation of legs). The Italian Vespa scooter was built in India under licence by Bajaj Auto, and together with the Italian Lambretta scooter dominated the two-wheeler scene. Much later came the hugely successful Bajaj Chetak scooter, but Bajaj has since lost the market to new entrants like Kinetic Motors. In the past decade, lightweight mini-scooters like the TVS Scooty and the Honda Activa have made it much easier for women to travel.
A main road in New Delhi. In India, driving is on the left side of road. The post-war years saw the predominance of foreign motorcycles, mainly British ones like Norton, BSA, Ariel etc. In the 1960s Indian-made bikes like Royal Enfield Bullet (a 350 cc British design), Jawa (a 250 cc Czech design) and Rajdoot (a 175 cc Polish design) predominated. After the beginning of liberalization Indian versions of popular Japanese bikes such as Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha hit the roads, leading to motorcycles outstripping scooters in popularity. The overwhelmingly large number of bikes sold have engines 175 cc or less.

Travel Guide - Passports and Visas
There are lots of things to do before you travel - by being prepared your journey will go more smoothly, and in the event of an emergency you will have a fall-back.
Visit (links to government sites): US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland all have travel advice sites. (TBA)
Passports and Visas
For every country you want to visit - find out if you need a visa. For a list of embassy and consulate websites, visaproject.com is a site that can help you. Check it out.
Examples: European Union - citizens of member countries can travel around freely, no visas required. Americans can travel to the European Union without visas - be aware that not all of Europe is part of the European Union - Ukraine is not a member and many nationalities need a visa. Europeans need a visa for visiting Australia!
Before applying for a visa, check out your passport, how long is it valid for ? If it is not valid for more than 6 months after the expected end of your travels - get it renewed - many countries require you to have a period of validity on your passport of 6 months beyond your entry, for example Australia.
TravelTIP: Look after your passport - on the road it is one of your two most important possessions, the other being your money/atm/credit card. Do not let these get damaged or stolen. Get an under-clothes wallet, and a watertight plastic bag that is slightly larger than your passport - a zip locking freezer bag is suitable, with a piece of rigid (but thin plastic) that is the same size - place your atm card, credit card, rigid plastic and passport inside the water tight bag, and place all this in your under-clothes wallet. Keep some of your money, a photocopy of your passport in a more accessible place, as you'll be asked for your passport details quite often for administrative purposes, such as checking in to hostels and hotels - so use the photocopy instead.

JAISALMER TOURISM - Jaisalmer History
The 'Golden City' of Jaisalmer was founded in the year 1156 by a Bhatti Rajput prime Jaisala named the city from the vulnerable former capital of Lodhruva, 15 kms to the southeast. The succession of Maharajas of Jaisalmer trace their lineage back to the ruler of Bhatti Rajput Clan Jailasimha. It was in fulfillment of Lord Krishna's prophecy that a distant scion of his Yadav clan would build a kingdom here. There was water on the hill, a miracle performed by Krishna to quench the thirst of Arjuna. The hilltop offered the safest fort location, dominating and surveying the desert for miles. The Lunar clan of Bhattis is Krishna's descendant, valiant and most feared of the dessert marauders, perennially locked in territorial skirmishes with Jodhpur and Bikaner. One Bhatti scion-Gaj Singh had founded the city of Ghazni in Afghanistan but ultimately lost it to forces from Khorasan. One of his grandsons reclaimed Ghazni, embraced Islam, and came to be called Chagattas (Mughals). They later plundered the land of their ancestors between 1000 and 1025 A.D. Again, led by Babar they came to found the Mughal Empire in India. Today, tourism will soon rival military bases as the pillar of the city's economy. The military bases hardly impinge at all on the life of the old city and only the occasional sound of war planes landing or taking off in the distance ever disturbs the tranquillity of this desert gem. It's not always been so peaceful, of course, since fortresses have rarely been constructed for aesthetic reasons and medieval desert chieftains were not known for their pacific temperaments. Chivarlic rivelry and ferocity between the various Rajput clans were the order of the day and the Bhatti Rajputs of Jaisalmer were regarded as a formidable force throughout the region. While Jaisalmer largely escaped direct conquest by the muslim rulers of Delhi, it did experience its share of sieges and sackings with the inevitable jauhar being declared in the face of inevitable defeat. There is perhaps no Rajasthani city in which you can more easily conjure up the spirit of those times.

JAISALMER TOURISM - Jaisalmer Introduction
Rajasthan, the land of the kings, in India at its exotic and colourful best with its battle-scarred forts, its palaces of breathtaking grandeur and whimsical charm, its riotous colours and even its romantic sense of pride and honour. Jaisalmer is a great place to simply wander. The old city was once completely surrounded by an extensive wall, much of which has sadly been ripped away in recent times for building material. Some of it remains, however, including the city gates and, inside them, the massive fort which rises above the city and is the essence of Jaisalmer. The main market area is directly below the hill, while the banks, the new palace and several other shops and offices are near the Amar Sagar Gate to the west.

It is advisable not to pack too many things, as it is impossible not to buy things in India. In fact the most reluctant and miserly shoppers succumb within the first few days unless they are held back. Just carry things that can be used up and thrown out at the end (creams, shampoos etc.) Though a lot of variety is available in the big cities.

Transport in India - Long distance transport - Air travel
India's booming economy has created a large middle-class population in India. Five years back, air travel was a dream for the majority of the Indian population. But rapid economic growth has made air travel more and more affordable in India. Air India, India's flag carrier, presently operates a fleet 42 aircraft and plays a major role in connecting India with the rest of the world. Several other foreign airlines connect Indian cities with other major cities across the globe.
Jet Airways, Indian (formerly Indian Airlines), Air Sahara and Alliance Air are the most popular brands in domestic air travel in order of their market share. Of these, Jet, Indian and Sahara also operate overseas routes after the liberalisation of Indian Aviation. These airlines connect more than 80 cities across India. However, a large section of country's air transport system remains untapped.
India's vast unutilized air transport network has attracted several investments in the Indian air industry in the past few years. More than half a dozen low-cost carriers entered the Indian market in 2004-05. Major new entrants include Air Deccan, Kingfisher Airlines, SpiceJet, GoAir, Paramount Airlines and IndiGo Airlines. To meet India's rapidly increasing demand for air travel, Air India recently placed orders for more than 68 jets from Boeing for 7.5 billion USD while Indian placed orders for 43 jets from Airbus for 2.5 billion USD. Jet Airways, India's largest private carrier, has invested billions of dollars to increase its fleet. This trend is not restricted to traditional air carriers in India. IndiGo Airlines came into the news with a bang when it announced orders for 100 Airbus A320s worth 6 billion USD during the Paris Air Show; the highest by any Asian domestic carrier. Kingfisher Airline became the first Indian air carrier in June 15, 2005 to order Airbus A380 aircraft. The total deal with Airbus was worth 3 billion USD.

East India - Touristic Places in West Bengal - Howrah Bridge
Website-http://zaydadguru.com/
About The Howrah Bridge
The Howrah Bridge is the first cantilever suspension bridge of its type. Its a feat in modern engineering and technology. Constructed in 1874 over the river Hooghly, the bridge joins the twin cities of Howrah and Kolkata (Calcutta). In year 1871, the need for a bridge between Howrah and Calcutta was felt. After its completion in 1874, it became India's first floating structure. The bridge was partially built in India and partially in Britain. It is one of three bridges on the river Hooghly and is the most famous symbol of not only Calcutta but also West Bengal.
The Architecture
Calcutta-Howrah Bridge is a feat of nineteenth-century bridge engineering and technology. The 270 ft high and 1528 ft long bridge was completed in 1874, becoming the biggest floating structure of India. Famed British professional Engineer Sir Bradford Leslie was appointed the chief architect for the project. Due to some technical reasons, a portion of the bridge was made in England and shipped to Calcutta. The bridge got partially destroyed by the great cyclone of 20 March 1874. A steamer, collided with the bridge and damaged three pontoons, amounting to total destruction of 200 ft of the massive structure. The bridge eventually got completed and was opened for traffic on 17 October 1874. It was described as a structure of novelty and originality in its design. The bridge though has gone very old but is still holding good. A new bridge, alongside the old bridge, got constructed to reduce the traffic load on the older one.

Delhi - Heritage - MUSIC
Music is the base of life. Without music life is devoid of the colours. The emotions and sentiments in life finds expression in music. Music was born with the birth of the Universe. In India music is there in its veins and in the life line of its society. In the Indian mythology special place has been given to the musicians and even God are addicted to music. Music provides the relationship between God and Human beings.
In India the musicians create the effect of seasons through ragas, the feelings of the seasons are incorporated in the ragas. One such musician was the legendary "Tansen". He was said to have performed miracles with his ragas. He painted pictures, brought rains, lighted fire with his singing. One of the stories about him goes that while watching birds in the jungle he noticed that by the whistling of birds in the dusk twigs caught fire. Tansen then experimented with ragas and formulated the raga Deepak. This raga when sung caused fire in the area of performance. During this time Akbar was the Emperor and his rivals forced Tansen to sing the raga so that every thing gets burnt. But Tansen asked for some time and in the mean while he taught a lady the raga to bring rains. This was raga Megha Malhar.
On the fixed day when Tansen was performing every thing got heated up. the lamps started glowing but nothing caught fire. This was because the lady was singing Megha Malhar which brought rains to douse off the fire. Such was the magic of Tansen who could alter the course of nature with his ragas. India has produced masters like Tansen.

AURANGABAD TOURISM - Aurangabad History
Website-http://zaydadguru.com/
Aurangabad is tinged with a distinctive Arabian aura. The city was named after Aurangazeb but earlier it was known as Khadke. Square shaped, stone homes with smooth edges lone the street in small sections of town. Very few peple use this new name and the city's Muslim Havor is evident/ tangible amidst the tourist boom and the economic development typist of Mumbai's hinterland. Their efforts like most of their kind however seem an ineffectual charade of semantics; few use the new name, Sambhajinagar and the city's Muslim flavor endures amid the tourist boom and the economic development typical of Mumbai's hinterland.
Buddhism was introduced to this region during the reign of the powerful Mauryan Emperors and its rapid acceptance is evident in the profusion of Buddhist cave temples found in and around modern aurangabad. The Hindu temples of Ellora built by the kings of the Satvahana and Rashtrakuta dynasties predate the influx of Buddhism. Strategically located in the centre of India, the region was considered the safest from the marauding armies of the Afghan and Central Asian raiders. The Tughlaq King Mohammed bin Tughlaq of the Delhi Sultanate moved his capital from Delhi, along with the citizens to this area in the 14th century but failed due to poor logistical planning.
